General Information About Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a modern big city, with over 1 million. inhabitants, is the largest urban centre in northern Greece.

Located in a fertile land that grows around the rivers Axios and Loudias, French, Lakes koronia and volvi and the seas of thermaikos and of Strymonikos Gulf.

Inhabited since prehistoric times and in the region there are traces of life from that time. The city founded in 315 BC by the King Cassander of Macedon, son of General Antipater left as bailiff in Macedonia Alexander the great when he dared the great campaign in Asia.

Cassander, after having dominated the battle of the diadochi, married the step-sister of Alexander the great, Thessaloniki, and founded in honor of the city, joining 26 small settlements that were around there.

The city’s symbol is the White Tower. Overlooking the beach and now hosts a Museum, wonderful collections relating to the history of Byzantine Thessaloniki. It was built in approximately ad 1500 and was part of the defensive system of the city.

The modern element of the city blended harmoniously with history, as reflected in the archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, interesting monuments.

The city is full of life at all hours of the day and especially at night acquires another colour, as the city is known for the quality of entertainment.

Walking to the shopping center, walk on the beach and in the Castles and museums in the famous ouzo on the market or the Old Beach and visiting the museums are just a few of our suggestions to explore Thessaloniki within hours.

All with a leisurely pace, after travelling to the Centre is easy because of the small, relatively, distances.
